OK. i'm going to start generating a list
Games for Opening Tournament. games that don't exactly require the utmost skill to play. mario kart is a good example. a new comer would have a chance at being first if they were lucky enough. i guess we can go to as skilled as..... power stone. but thats pushin it.
games:
raymond raving rabbits
mario party ( )
Mario Kart Double Dash
Power Stone 2
DDR (with divisions light-standard-heavy-mikey)
Cruisin' America
Daytona USA
Burnout
Guitar Hero ( )
Rock Band (See DDR)
you've got the push! you've got the power! now decide!

Hahaha... I'm happy to know that I warrant my own difficulty.
Guitar Hero(s)/Rock Band, with whatever the difficulties are, like DDR.
Any arcade-style racing game. Can't think of any off the top of my head =P.

Hahaha, not Gran Turismo. That's the simulation based racer.
Cruisin' America. Daytona USA. Burnout (racing and destruction and mini-games). Rush was a fairly fun one.

DDR is more difficult than Guitar Hero / Rock Band if you ask me.
Hitting 4 arrow pads won't click as quickly as an instrument they've seen or maybe even played before.

Andy asked for casual-gamer-friendly games. Most of them on that list take a lot of time to even learn let alone master.

JJ... Andy also means game that people aren't amazing at compared to the general population. Guitar Hero, Rock band, and DDR are on the list because there are difficulty settings.
Put yourself and a noob against each other on almost any game you mentioned, and you would win, hands down. Put you and a noob against each other on Mario Kart, and there's a competition.

we're just looking for a jumping point right now, not a destination. one day there will be multiple tournaments of anything you can think of. i'm just trying to make a WIDE grasp, then later on start making divisions of our audience.

A descent mixture of both, no doubt. I, for one, actually enjoy casual gaming, however, as a gamer I enjoy the "hardcore" games. I don't mind joining the casual tournaments if it means getting business.

jj you're choices are not wrong, they are far from it. and they will be included most definately. like you said, the top selling games would only make sense to market on them. the list i'm creating now is not going to be the only games we ever play, it's just going to be the first tournament. this way people's girlfriends can even have a chance and will more likely enter.
